Song entitled SQRLPWR featuring my poem “This is the Land that Bred Me”. SQRLPWR is an experimental soundscape that uses found sound from live squirrels and birds in my neighborhood in Houston, TX, which is in truth the land of the Indigenous Atakapa Ishak people (past, present, and future). I also captured sound from car honks to add to the percussive and rhythmic nature of this piece. The poem featured on top of the song is essentially my declaration of surrendering to the very land on which I was raised. The humidity, the nature, the sounds are in my blood. So are the mosquitos! This land holds so much trauma for both my Black ancestors as well as Indigenous communities. I aim to be in a conversation of healing with this land by way of creativity.
